Walter Frederick Lawetzki was born June 9, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to Walter Paul and Hermine (Knapp) Lawetzki. He passed away Saturday, March 10, 2012 at his home in Whittier, California at the age of 84.'Walt' grew up and went to school in Chicago. He joined the US Army and served his country with honor. After the war he made his home in Rhinelander, Wisconson. He gained some technical training and began his career as a Millwright in the Carpenter's Union--a career he continued for 55 years! In 1966, Walt moved to Whittier, California. He married Robin Lynn Ainslie on March 31, 1990, and they have continued to live in Whittier until the time of his death.Family was extremely important to Walter, and he loved them very much. He enjoyed camping, hunting, photography, and volunteering in the community. A true Patriot, Walt frequently visited local schools to speak on the subject patriotism. VFW Post 9148 was his second home. He served as Post Commander four times, was Captain of the Honor Guard, and served in several other capacities within the Post. His loss will be deeply felt among his comrades. Walter is survived by his wife, Robin; daughter, Michelle and Lynnette; sons, Walter, Jonathan, and Frank; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis.Viewing will begin at 10:00am on Friday, March 16th at Faith Lutheran Church, 9920 S. Mills, Whittier, California. A service will immediately follow at 11:00am. Military Honors will be performed at a committal service that afternoon at 2:30 at Olive Lawn Memorial Park, 13926 S. La Mirada Blvd., La Mirada, California.Walt will be remembered for his big smile and hugs. Nor will anyone forget, 'Pass the yum yum!'
