Robert Guzman Roel was born April 15, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas, to Joe and Guadalupe (Guzman) Roel. He passed away February 3, 2017, in Whittier, California, at the age of 78.
Flaco, as he was affectionately known, grew up and went to school in San Antonio. He joined the US Marine Corps after high school and served honorably during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from the Marines, Robert settled in Los Angeles County, California. He worked for BF Goodrich for a number of years, and later worked in sales and service of home appliances.
Sports were a big part of Flacos life. He was an avid fan of the Dodgers, Lakers, Raiders and Bruins. While he enjoyed all sports, he especially liked baseball. He played baseball as a young man, and the love of the sport stuck with him. Robert used to joke about moving to LA because the Dodgers moved to LA! His love for the game was also a catalyst for being involved in local youth leagues. He managed many teams, not only coaching, but mentoring the youth he came in contact with. Deep sea fishing was another passion of Roberts. He was involved in a fishing club and loved being out on the ocean.
Robert will be remembered as a strong, resilient man who worked hard to take care of his family. He was a loving husband and a good dad. He leaves behind his dear wife, Geraldine; four children, Robert (Patricia), Anthony (Reina), Kimberly and Jason (Nicole) Roel; seven grandchildren; and four sisters, Nora, Gloria, Sylvia and Hope.
A memorial service will be held at 5:30pm on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at White Emerson Mortuary, 13304 Philadelphia St., Whittier, California. Private interment will take place at Rose Hills Memorial Park at a later date.
