Nick was born on November 1, 1922 in Gurley, Nebraska. He was the ninth of nine children born to Charles Oscar and Etha Edna Nickles. He married B. Joyce Bixby, better known as Jo, on July 12, 1945 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Together, they celebrated 67 years of marriage earlier this year. From their union, they raised two daughters, Gwen and Gay.
Nick served in the U.S. Army Corps from 1943 to 1946, with service in the Asiatic Pacific in 1945. He served as a truck driver, attended automotive mechanics school, entered the marksman corps with a sharpshooter carbine, and qualified for the motorcycle division as well. He earned an American Theater of Operations Service Ribbon, and Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal, a Meritorious Unit award and a Victory Medal. He also earned marksmanship medal while serving.
After World War II, Nick and Jo moved to California where he worked as a mechanic before going to work at Los Angeles' Department of Water and Power He retired as a senior warehouseman in 1987, after 38 years of service.
Nick was an active member in several neighborhood churches. The family attended La Habra Christian while his daughters were growing up, then La Mirada Christian, Whittier Church of God, and Morningstar Christian Chapel. He served as both elder and deacon, chaired numerous committees, and volunteered his time in a variety of positions at these churches.
Nick enjoyed puzzles, both word and jigsaw, golfing, touring and traveling. An active member of the International Order of the Rainbow with his daughter, he then joined the Masonic Lodge and was an active member for decades.
One of the joys of his life was being in the presence of his grandchildren and the great grandchildren of his close-knit family. His family includes his wife Jo; daughters Gwen Busby and Gay Roby; sons-in-law Larry Busby and Tim Roby; 5 grandchildren and their spouses (Lee Busby, Wendy Leetch and Jim Leetch, Joshua and Meghann Robern, Seth and Sonja Roby, and Benjamin Roby), and eight great-grandchildren (Brandon, Ty, Amber, Sheree, Mikayla, Prudence, Kairi, and Percival).
He is proceeded in death by his parents, four brothers, and four sisters.
Funeral/memorial services will be held at Church of Godd on Wednesday, August 28th at 12302 Beverly Blvd Whittier CA 90601. Interment will be at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, Ca 90601.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the Wise-cracker Competition of America, an unofficial organization to which he has belonged for many years!
