Marie Leone Alcala

February 27, 1920 — September 20, 2016

Marie Leone Leonor Alcal passed away in Whittier, California on September 20, 2016. Born on February 27, 1920, she was born in Twin Bluffs, Illinois to her parents, Primitivo & Francisca (Cabral) Carrillo. She was the loving wife of Antonio Alcal for 74 years, and she was the proud mother of five children. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

At an early age, Marie lost her mother while living in Dawson, New Mexico. Following her mothers death, she, along with her eldest sister Maria and infant brother Ezequiel were sent to Zacatecas, Mexico to be raised by her grandmother and uncle. Maries father remained in New Mexico but also died when Marie was a child, leaving her an orphan. She went on to attend various schools in different cities and towns in Zacatecas. As a girl, she met a boy, Antonio, who would one day become her husband. Together they were married on August 5, 1942 in Zacatecas. Antonio travelled to the U.S. to register for the military service during WWII. In 1947, Marie and her two eldest children moved to the states to join Antonio where they settled in Los Angeles. They eventually settled in Pico Rivera in 1969. She was a homemaker and mother to her children, and also helped raise her nephews, nieces and extended family.

Marie held many interests including gardening, crocheting, embroidering and watching Telenovelas. She was a devoted fan at her grandsons high school, college and professional football games. Nothing meant more to Marie than spending time together with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildrenchances were she was always cooking a meal for her family when they gathered. No one left her home empty-handed or without eating a hearty meal. She was also a very devout parishioner of St. Mariana de Pardes Catholic Church in Pico Rivera for 48 years.

Marie is survived by her husband, Antonio; daughters, Lee, Anna, Terry and Laura; daughter-in-law, Alice; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and great grand nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her son, Hector, infant brother Ezequiel, sisters Maria, Adelina, Angelina, and Carmen.
