Maria de la Cruz Barquero was born on May 3, 1916 in Managua, Nicaragua. She passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at her home in Norwalk. Maria, or 'Crucita', as she was known back home in Nicaragua, grew up and went to school in Nicaragua. She married Jorge 'Domingo' Rodriguez and together they had four children. They immigrated to the United States around 1964 and made their new home in Los Angeles County, California.'Abuelita' was the name Maria heard most by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved her family, and she was very loving and caring towards them. She was always there for them, wanting to help. Abuelita was very strong-willed. After she gave up driving, she was not deterred from seeing her family. She frequently took the bus all over to see them.In addition to spending time with family, Maria enjoyed playing the guitar and sewing. She had spent many years as a seamstress in Nicaragua. Maria is survived by her daughter, Daisy Wade; sons, Enrique, Nestor and George Rodriguez; sisters, Juana Torres and Candida Barquero; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.Viewing will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at White Emerson Mortuary, 13304 E. Phildelphia St., Whittier, California 90601. The service will immediately follow at 11:00 am, also at the mortuary. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Montebello, California.
