Margaret Elizabeth Porteous
March 15, 1919 - November 2, 2016
Bette grew up in Birmingham, Michigan and attended local schools. After graduation from High School, Bette went to work for Michigan Bell Telephone Company, starting out as an operator on the switch board and retired after 40 years as a supervisor, which was an exceptional accomplishment for a woman of that time.
Bette spent many years taking care of her parents and older sister along with her career responsibilities. After retirement from Michigan Bell in 1976, she moved to Whittier, CA with her older sister, Ethol to be close to family and escape the weather in Michigan. After settling in Whittier, she became very involved in volunteer activities at the local hospital and Senior Citizen Groups and took many trips and cruises with her sister, Ethol. She moved to The Palms Retirement Center in 1999 where she was very active in social activities and other leadership functions. She never married but was very involved in the lives of her nieces and nephews.
She is proceeded in death by her three siblings, Ethol Irene Kimberly, Dorothy Rosemond Potter and Charles Everett Porteous and a niece, Marijane Frances Ward. She is survived by her remaining nieces and nephews, Virginia Gatlin, Charles Porteous, Barbara Saunders, Diane Monnier, Charles Potter, and her several great-nieces and nephews.
