Lilly R. Valle was born June 24, 1924, in Los Angeles, California, to Alfredo and Matilde (Eribes) Cobos. She passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, in Downey, California, at the age of 90.
Lilly grew up on a dairy in Downey, California. She attended school in Downey, graduating from Downey High School in 1942. She married Victor M. Valle shortly after graduating from high school. They were married in Downey and made their first home there. They moved to Santa Fe Springs and Los Nietos before settling in uptown Whittier, California.
Though she was always around for her children, Lilly worked for a time as a clerk for Shopping Bag supermarket and she did the accounting for the family jewelry store.
Faith was an important part of Lillys life. She was a devoted Catholic and was very active in her local parish. During her years in Whittier, she attended St. Mary of the Assumption Church. She and Victor went on many church sponsored trips and Lilly served on the Festival of the Americas committee.
Lilly was a gourmet cook who thoroughly enjoyed cooking. She also loved being outside, whether it was gardening in her yard or camping and fishing in the outdoors. Painting and traveling were also among her favorite pastimes. Lilly was a passionate political activist. She was a proud supporter of the United Farm Workers (UFW), and she was a member of the Mark Twain Democratic Club in Whittier. She and Victor served on the Parent Advisory Committee under the Expanded Horizons Program at Pioneer High School as well.
Her family will remember her as a loving and devoted mother and grandmother who was always very supportive. She was a woman of high energy and full of passion for whatever she engaged in. She also had an entrepreneurial spirit.
Lilly is survived by three children and their spouses, Lilly (Luis) Hernandez, Victor (Mary) Valle, and Christina (Arturo) Duran; son-in-law, John Quiroz; sisters, Elvira Lopez and Hortensia Webster; brother, Robert Cobos; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Victor Manuel, daughter, Otila E. Quiroz and her grandson, Carlos Hernandez.
Viewing will take place from 6-7pm on Friday, January 30, 2015, at White Emerson Mortuary, 13304 E. Philadelphia St., Whittier, California. A vigil service will immediately follow at 7pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated the following morning at 11am at St. Mariana de Paredes Church, 7922 Passons Boulevard, Pico Rivera, California. Interment will immediately follow at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.
