Kenneth Roy Nelson, a beloved father known for his dedication and craftsmanship, passed away peacefully in Whittier on August 1, 2023.
He was born on January 17, 1944, to his loving parents, Roy, and Gladys. As a young man Ken’s family moved to South Gate, CA. He met his first wife, Catherine Grzebien, in 1961, at South Gate High School where they both attended school. After a whirlwind courtship they were soon engaged and got married. Their romance lasted until 1990 and was blessed with two children. Ken had another chance at love when he met Velda Lee Carver who became his beloved wife of 23 years.
Ken was predeceased by his wife Velda in 2018. He is survived by his daughter Valerie Ferrante and her husband Rick, and son, Randy Nelson, his wife Cory Nelson, granddaughters, Sharlyn Davidson (husband Ian) and Jessica Omar (husband Brandon). Sister Joanne Murray. Through his marriage to Velda, three additional granddaughters also survive him – Robin Gregory, Sonnet Jones, and Kelly Goodwin and nine great grandchildren.
His memory will also be revered by numerous extended family members and friends who were touched by his presence.
Ken's passion for working with his hands led him to pursue a career as a machinist. He honed his skills over the years and became widely respected within the industry for his precision and attention to detail. Ken's commitment to his craft was evident in every project he took on, and his work left an indelible mark in the field.
Outside of work, Ken had a wide range of hobbies and interests. He found solace and joy in working with his hands both professionally and personally. Whether it was repairing machinery or working on his hot rod, Ken's talent was unmatched. He took pride in every creation and found immense satisfaction in the process. He was a lifelong auto racing enthusiast and enjoyed his time at the track viewing any type of race. A treasured highlight in life for Ken was getting in the car, taking road trips, and finding any new adventure. He loved drives by the beach and discovering a new spot for his favorite cuisine, Mexican food. Especially when he was traveling with Velda by his side!
Beyond his professional achievements, Ken was a cherished husband, father, and friend. His warm smile, kind-hearted nature, and unwavering support were sources of inspiration to those fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will forever be cherished by family and friends.
To honor Ken's remarkable life, a Memorial Gathering will be held at White Emerson Mortuary located at 13304 Philadelphia Street in Whittier, CA on August 28, 2023. The gathering will begin at 10:00 AM and conclude at 1:00 PM, providing an opportunity for family, friends, and colleagues to come together to celebrate Ken's life and share memories.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family kindly requests that donations be made to ASPCA (www.aspca.org) in Kenneth's honor. This gesture will further his legacy of compassion and generosity.
Kenneth Roy Nelson will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a talented machinist, a loving father, and a treasured friend. His contributions to his profession and the lives he touched will continue to inspire generations to come. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
