Kathy

Katherine "Kathy" Hernandez passed away on December 8, 2021 in Long Beach, California at the age of 72. She was born on June 3, 1949 in Los Angeles California to Konrad and Mary Von Schoech (Gomez). She met her husband, Gilbert Hernandez, while attending Lincoln High School in Los Angeles. They were married in December 1965 at the All Saints Church. The rapidly growing family lived in Los Angeles for five years, before heading to their home in Whittier, where they spent the next 40 plus years.
By the late 70's and into the 80's, Kathy was busy spending most of her time cooking for her five boys and helping out at the baseball and football fields. Whether as the official scorekeeper, working the snack shack, or helping raise money at the Christmas tree lot, she was well known and loved by many of the local families. When she wasn't busy with the family, Kathy loved to read, play bingo, and try her luck on the slot machines in Vegas or Laughlin.
After her boys started families of their own, her next favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren. Everyone of the 16 grandchildren loved to be with their grandma. She often would make them whatever they wanted, tacos and enchiladas being two of the favorite choices, just so she could spend more time with them. Kathy was so great with kids, that she and one of her daughter-in-laws opened a daycare together. Most recently, Kathy was the head chef at a small private Christian school, where she planned and cooked breakfast and lunch for all the students.
Kathy is survived by her husband of 55 years, five sons, sixteen grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.
The celebration of life for Katherine Hernandez will take place on Wednesday, December 22nd, at White Emerson Mortuary, located at 13304 Philadelphia St Whittier, Ca from 10am-12pm. There will be a graveside service which will start at 12:30pm. This will be held at Olive Lawn Memorial Park, located at 13926 La Mirada Blvd, La Mirada Ca.
