John George Gorski, 91, residing in Canyon Country, CA, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2017. John, known as Jack to his family and friends, was born in Philadelphia, PA, where he attended St. Josephs Preparatory School. At age 18, Jack entered the service where he served his country with honor as a corporal in the United States Army 2nd Armored Division during World War II. A Purple Heart Medal recipient for his participation in the European theater, Jack recently was honored as a candidate for the French Legion of Honor. Upon his discharge from the army, Jack attended Drexel University and graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. In Philadelphia, Jack met the love of his life, Mary Mitchell, whom he married in 1951. They moved to Merchantville, NJ, where Jack and Mary built their first home together and started their family.
Jacks career as an avionics engineer brought Mary and their four children to California in 1957. Two more children joined the family in Woodland Hills, CA. While employed at RCA, Jack showed distinction by receiving RCAs highest technical honor, the David Sarnoff award, for outstanding technical achievement in the development of airborne color weather radar indicators. Jack and Mary moved to Phoenix, AZ, in 1982 following his job transfer where they subsequently retired in 1987. Jack then started his 25 year volunteer career working in the Food Bank at the St. Vincent de Paul Society and at the Phoenix Public Library. They were blessed with wonderful friends and neighbors.
In addition to raising six children, Jack loved working around the house and always had several projects in the works. He found time to garden and loved to grow vegetables. A life-long learner, he embraced technology and welcomed the computer age. His love of photography from a very young age provided a wonderful documentation of his life in pictures and lasting memories for his family.
Jack is survived by daughters Rosemary (Ron) Lieberman of Carlsbad, CA, Eloise (Dennis) Branden of Williamsburg, VA, sons David (Robin) of Canyon Country, CA, Gregory (Elizabeth) of Whittier, CA, Matthew (Catherine) of Belmont Shore, CA and daughter Nancy (Steve) Margolis of Westlake Village, CA. In addition to eight grandchildren and their spouses, and four great-grandchildren, Jack is also survived by his sister, Marian Anderson of Cherry Hill, NJ.
Jack was eternally grateful for the blessings bestowed upon him, and in particular, his wife Mary. Known to all by his grandchildrens name for him, Pop, he treasured his family above all.
