Isabel Catherine Hurtado
July 7, 1919 - September 19, 2016
Isabel Catherine Hurtado was born in El Monte, California on July 7, 1919 to parents Dario and Dolores Reyes. Isabel had 3 siblings, all of whom predeceased her: Doris, Salvador, and Rojelio. At a young age, both of their parents passed away due to
Tuberculosis. Originally, Isabel and her siblings were placed in a foster home. However, when the foster home could not keep all 4 children, Isabel and Doris moved to a Catholic Orphanage in Los Angeles where they were both raised by nuns. The nuns made sure that Isabel and Doris had frequent visits with their brothers. Living at the Catholic Orphanage set the foundation for Isabels strong Catholic faith and a love of reading. Their living situation, also, fostered a very special and close relationship between Isabel and her sister.
When Isabel was around the age of 15, she and Doris moved out of the orphanage to live together. Isabel, immediately, began working as a seamstress at Graff clothing. In the summer of 1946, she met her husband, Pedro Hurtado, on a sunbathing trip to Redondo Beach, California. They fell in love and were married on June 1, 1947. Together, they had 3 children: Dolores, Michael, and Paul (Paul predeceased her in February of 2016). They raised their children in the Catholic Church and worked hard to ensure that their children could attend Catholic school.
At the age of 65, Isabel retired from her career as a seamstress to enjoy life with her husband. They were active in their parish church, St. Gregory the Great Church, where they were active members with the Senior Group. She, also, enjoyed life with her 8 grandchildren: Lisa, Antoinette, Paul, Antianessa, Phillip, Elizabeth, Jennifer, and Andrew. Her husband passed away in December of 2004. For the past 5 years, Isabel was living at Whittier Glen Assisted Living in Whittier, California where she happily enjoyed fellowship and friendships with her resident neighbors. On September 19, 2016, she peacefully passed. She is the last of her siblings to pass. Isabel was a loving wife, mom, grandma, and friend. She is loved and will be dearly missed.
