Hyrum Atkin Hansen was born 25 October 1935 in Bear River, Utah. He is the son of Milton and Mary Hansen. He was raised in Pioche, Nevada.
In 1955 he graduated from Northrup Aeronautical School in Inglewood, California, with his Airplane Mechanic license. He graduated from Utah State University in 1959 with a Bachelors in Aeronautical Engineering.
Prior to graduating from university, Hyrum worked in a gas station, an assay office, and in the mines near his home town. While working in the mines he crushed his right thumb between a mine cart and the engine he was driving. This injury nearly cost him his thumb and kept him out of the Korean War. Hyrum worked for various aerospace firms over the years, ultimately retiring from Northrup Grumman. During his career he performed structural engineering tasks for rockets, the space shuttle, satellites, missiles, helicopters, and many modern, high-performance airplanes.
On 27 December 1958, he married Alice Roberts in the Logan Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Alice and Hyrum recently celebrated their 57th anniversary.
Hyrum Hansen died 26 August 2016 at his home in Hacienda Heights, California, where he lived for more than 45 years. He is survived by Alice, their six children and their spouses, 30 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
