Grace N. Hall, 90, passed away in Norwalk, California on September 28, 2017. Born in Rock Rapids, Iowa on August 3, 1927, Grace was born to her parents Henry & Johanna Nootenboom. On September 7, 1950, Grace was married to her husband, Hugo Hall, Jr. at Calvary Baptist Church in Whittier where Grace had been a member since 1947. She will be missed deeply by her family and friends.
Growing up in the Midwest, Grace came from a family of migrant farmers. Her family moved to California in order for her father to work as a riveter during the war. As a young girl, Grace attended multiple schools in both Iowa and Nebraska where she only completed the eighth grade. However, her education never stopped; after moving to southern California, she attended the Marinello Beauty School in Los Angeles. She eventually moved to Whittier and worked as a hairdresser for many years at the Cinderella Hair Salon in Uptown Whittier.
Grace was a seamstress; she loved to sew. She was incredibly skilled, including making wedding gowns for her daughters and her friends throughout the years. She also proudly made clothing and costumes for her children and grandkids. Along with her skill of sewing, she also loved to bake. Baking cookies for her kids, their friends and her family were some of the most memorable occasions that her kids recall. Grace seemed to know one of the secrets of life: good food helps create great community.
Grace is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Rollema, Malia Mills, Wendy Winters, & Jinnie Gardiner; her grandchildren, Ingrid, Zachary, Helen, Daisy, Pauline, Emily, Justin, Chase, Tashanna and Kinsey; great grandchildren, Violet, Izaak, Jazmyn, Delaney, Trenton, and Tanner; and her nephew, Guil Yates.
