George Kenneth Tenopir, 90, died on September 21, 2014 in Whittier at his home of 61 years. George spent most of his adult life at Whittier College, earning his bachelors degree and masters degree in history and serving as admissions counselor and then Dean of Admissions and Director of Financial Aid from 1952 until his retirement in 1989. George was a President of the California Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CASFAA) and a CASFAA honorary life member. He was also a long-time member of the Whittier a.m. Ys Men Club and a volunteer for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Greater Whittier.
Born in 1923 in Friend, Nebraska George attended one year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before being drafted into the army in World War II, where he served in the European theater. At a USO dance while stationed at Camp Cook in Lompoc, California, George met his future wife Jane Longwell, then a student at Whittier College. After being discharged from the Army in 1946, George moved to Whittier to attend college with Jane. They were married for 63 years until her death in 2010. He is also preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister. George remained a lifelong supporter of both Whittier College and the University of Nebraska.
George leaves three children: Kathryn Tenopir Remkiewicz of Oakdale California (husband Frank), Carol Tenopir of Knoxville, Tennessee (husband Jerry Lundeen), and David Tenopir of Whittier, California (wife Juana Torres); four grandchildren: Rebekah Remkiewicz of Oakdale, California, Ensign Matthew Remkiewicz of Portsmouth, Virginia (wife Sarah), Andrew Tenopir Lundeen of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (wife Norma), and Emily Tenopir of Whittier; four great-grandchildren: Connor and Kiera McCurdy and Katelyn and Jackson Remkiewicz; and many nieces and nephews.The family requests donations to the George K.
