George Edward Barnett

George Edward 'Ed' Barnett was born August 23, 1939, in Syracuse, New York. He passed away February 25, 2014, at home in La Mirada, California, at the age of 74.



Ed spent his early years in New York, moving to California at the age of 15. He spent his career as a pressman in the printing industry, and he was extremely proud of his work.



On July 19, 1962, Ed married the love of his life, Josephine Galvan, in Santa Ana, California. They made their home in Whittier, California for many years, and eventually moved to La Mirada, California where he lived until the time of his death.



Ed was a sports fanatic of all kinds of sports. As a youth, he was quite athletic himself. He especially enjoyed playing city league softball. When he first started playing, he was the only 'white' guy on the team. Most of the players didn't know his name, so they affectionately started calling him 'Smith'--a common 'white' surname. In addition to softball, Ed played in a bowling league for many years and enjoyed shooting pool. He was especially passionate about horse racing. He spent many many weekends at the local tracks over the years. A great cook, Ed loved to barbecue and smoke meat. He was also a fan of John Wayne and Coors Light!



Those who knew Ed will remember him as 'firm, but fair.' He was a good man who was generous towards others. He was honest and hard working, always doing whatever it took to care for his family. He loved his family very much, and they meant the world to him. Ed had a great relationship with his grandchildren and had a great deal of influence in their lives.



Mr. Barnett is survived by his wife of over 51 years, Josephine; his daughter, Teresa (Raymond) Nau; and two grandchildren, Andrew and Megan.



Viewing will take place from 4-7pm on Monday, March 3, 2014, at White Emerson Mortuary, 13304 E. Philadelphia St., Whittier, California. A Vigil service will immediately follow at 7pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am the following morning, Tuesday, March 4th, at Beatitudes of Our Lord Church, 13013 S. Santa Gertrudes Ave., La Mirada, California. Burial will immediately follow at Olive Lawn Memorial Park, 13926 S. La Mirada Blvd., La Mirada, California.
