Gale Manning Sherrodd

Sherrodd, Gale Manning, 64, of La Mirada, CA, passed away September 21, 2012 after a long, painful struggle with prostate cancer. He was born in Billings, MT on October 16, 1947 to Cleo & Ida Phelps Sherrodd. He married Joan Marlene Schrupp on June 3, 1967 in Billings, MT.Gale grew up on a farm near Pompey's Pillar, MT and graduated from Huntley Project High School (Worden, MT) in 1965. Gale received a B.S. degree from Rocky Mountain College (Billings, MT) in 1969 and a Master's Degree in chemistry in 1971 from the University of Montana (Missoula, MT). He was a lifelong teacher at various schools in Montana, Wisconsin and California. He retired from his dream job in June 2009 after teaching chemistry for 13 years at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. There he was able to use his humor and artistic and musical talents, enabling his students to learn and enjoy chemistry. Gale was a 30-year Barbershop Harmony Society member, singing with the Rocky Mountainaires (Missoula, MT), the Choralaires (Whittier, CA), and the Masters of Harmony (Santa Fe Springs, CA) where he won five International gold medals. Gale's passion was his love of family, and preserving the past in photos and writings. He struggled to stay alive to complete his 'unfinished business.'Gale was preceded in death by his parents, his sister-in-law, Judy Sherrodd (October 2010), grand-niece Katie Howell (September 2011), father-in-law, Marvin Schrupp (April 2012), and a special cousin, Bill Sherrodd (August 2012). Gale will be sadly missed by his loving family: wife, Joan; sons, Sean (Roxann) Sherrodd and Shane (Devon) Sherrodd; grandchildren, Brianna, Kyle and Sadie Sherrodd, all of Hesperia, CA. He is further survived by his three older brothers, Leo (Charlotte) Sherrodd of Gillette, WY, Gary (Pat) Sherrodd of Hugo, OK, and Larry (Annegret) Sherrodd of Worden, MT; special nieces, nephews, cousins, and his mother-in-law Virginia Schrupp of Billings, MT.Many thanks to his barbershop friends, his neighbors and others who offered their love and support to the family. A special thank you goes to Dr. Han Koh, oncologist, at Kaiser Bellflower for his care and concern, and to the Kaiser Orange County Palliative and Hospice Care Services for the help they provided to Gale and his family.A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 from 5:00-8:00PM at White Emerson Mortuary, 13304 Philadelphia St., Whittier, CA 90601. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 11:00AM at the La Mirada United Methodist Church, 15700 Rosecrans Ave., La Mirada, CA 90638.
