Edward Hugh "Eddie" Blaikie was born on Mothers Day, May 11, 1952, in Everett, Massachusetts, to his parents, Joseph and Mary (McEleney) Blaikie. He passed away on February 24, 2020, in Whittier, California, at the age of 67.
Eddie grew up in Charlestown, Massachusetts, along with his 7 brothers and 2 sisters. He was always proud to be a Townie. He attended St. Francis de Sales Parochial School and was confirmed in the Catholic faith. During that time, he served as an altar boy for 6 years. Eddie went on to attend Charlestown High School, Bunker Hill Community College and LA Trade Technical College. He was drafted into the Navy and traveled the world during the Vietnam War. He attended basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois, and then was stationed in Long Beach, California. He was on a mine sweeper and served as Steward to the Captain. He met some lifelong friends during his service.
After Eddie returned home from the Navy, he moved to Long Beach, California. Eddie married Anne Marie Thompson on November 26, 1977, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Swift Falls, Minnesota. They bought their home in Whittier, California, where they enjoyed raising their 3 sons and attending school and sporting events.
Eddie worked for many years on the Queen Mary as an Operating Engineer. Later, he went into the film industry and worked as a Cinetechnician in Hollywood. He enjoyed working on the original films and seeing actors during the workday.
Eddie was a hockey player in high school and was a loyal Boston sports fan, cheering on the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and Patriots. He loved being from a city of championships!
Eddie coached youth soccer and was Nicks coach for many years. He enjoyed the team sport and teaching the boys about the game. He especially loved when they got to travel to Palmdale and compete with some great teams.
Eddie and his family spent many family vacations visiting the Thompsons in Minnesota and also traveling to the East Coast to visit the Blaikies in Boston. They traveled to Ireland and Scotland in 2017 for his nieces wedding and enjoyed seeing his heritage. He was very proud of his Irish / Scottish heritage.
Finding joy in service, Eddie volunteered with his family to work many community events, including the annual Bolsa Wetlands cleanup and Disney Half Marathons. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed attending the monthly senior luncheons with his friends from Faith Lutheran.
Surviving him are his wife, Anne; sons, Brandon (Elizabeth), Nicholas, and Nathan; 3 grandchildren, Thomas, Madeline and Benjamin; siblings, Mary Ridings, Bobby (Sue) Blaikie, Danny (Jen) Blaikie, Andy Blaikie, Mark (Patti) Blaikie, Peter (Jen) Blaikie, Laura (David) OBrien, and LaVergne Blaikie; Father-in-law, Thomas Thompson; siblings-in-law, Jeff (Kim) Thompson, Jay (Diane) Thompson, Todd (Robyn) Thompson, Diane Buterbaugh, Dennis Buterbaugh, and Debbie (Mike) Maras; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and brothers, Joseph Bud Blaikie and Michael Mickey Blaikie.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 2, 2020, at 11 am at Faith Lutheran Church, 9920 Mills Avenue, Whittier, California.
