Dorothea Clyde Irwin was born December 18, 1912, in Whittier in the home built by her parents, Clyde 'Pop' and Pearl Irwin. She was the middle of three girls. Dorothea graduated from Whittier High in 1930 and received her M.A. in Education from Whittier College in 1936. After college, she became a school teacher and married John 'Jack' Caylor, Sr. Together they travelled the world, including Europe, Panama, and the Eastern Caribbean. Her favorite vacation spot, however, always remained the cabin in Twin Peaks, Lake Arrowhead, built by her father. Dorothea was the mother of two children, John and Ann, grandmother to six, and great-grandmother to fourteen.Dorothea was a teacher within the El Rancho School District for over 50 years. Her love for music always remained close to heart. After retirement she sang in the 'Cheerios', or as the grandchildren called it the 'Fruitloops.' She was a member of the Palmer Society, PEO Chapter LX, Retired Teachers Association and was a devoted volunteer for Presbyterian Hospital thrift shop. Throughout her life, her most enjoyable times were spent gardening in the early mornings and sitting on the front porch with her best friend Millie, while landing the airplanes flying into LAX.In 2005, Dorothea became a resident of Whittier Hills Healthcare Center where she made many friends. With her daughter Ann by her side, Dorothea became somewhat of a celebrity among the residents. Dressed as Raggedy Ann or one of Hugh's bunnies, she always wore a contagious smile. She loved participating in activities, such as bingo, music, arts and crafts and senior topic.Dorothea touched the lives of many with her kindness and compassion. Today, as we celebrate her life and the Crown of Righteousness is bestowed upon her, may her memory be eternal and live within us always.
