Chrystal Evangeline Churchward was born February 27, 1918, to Austin and Margaret (Foster) Hayter in Stephen Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada. She passed away April 24, 2013 in Whittier, California, at the age of 95.
She grew up and went to school in Ontario, graduating from High School in the township of London. Chrystal also took additional courses that taught her shorthand--a skill she later used in her career as an executive secretary.
While working at a diner in Grand Bend, Ontario, a handsome young man by the name of William Churchward began to flirt with Chrystal. Their relationship blossomed and they were married on October 9, 1938 in London, Ontario, Canada. They made their home in London and started their family. In 1956, however, the family, having been sponsored by Chrystals brother here in California, immigrated to the United States and made their home in Whittier, California. Chrystal and William have lived in the same home until the time of their deaths.
Chrystal enjoyed painting, especially oil-based. She loved music and played both the organ and piano. In her younger years, she and William spent a good deal of fishing and boating together. Chrystal was a member of the Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her son, William Churchward; daughter, Heather McKenzie; six grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the White Emerson Mortuary Chapel, 13304 E. Philadelphia St., Whittier, CA 90601.
