Charles Robert Canning, 82, of Rocklin, California, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at 5:42 PM at the home of his son, Robert Charles Canning, in Rexburg, Idaho. Born January 3, 1936, in Bell, California, to Milan and Lois Canning, he was later joined by a younger brother, Richard Gary Canning.
Bob or Chuck, as he was more commonly known, grew up and spent most of his life in Downey, California. He did, however, also live in Fullerton, Rocklin and Lincoln, California.
In 1944, as a youth, Bob became active in the Boy Scouts of America. His scouting career culminated in 2015 when received the highly respected Silver Beaver Award. He gave many hours of service and dedicated his life to living the Boy Scout Law to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. He was always prepared and tried to do a good turn daily! This service brought many friendships and a lot of happiness to Bob's life.
Bob was a hardworking man. Upon graduation from high school, he attended East Los Angeles Junior College and later graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS in Business. He began working with his father and spent most of his life running his hardware business, Canning's Hardware, with multiple locations. He completed his career focusing on the Maywood, California location.
Bob was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved his Savior, Jesus Christ. He served in the Swiss-Austrian Mission from 1956 to 1959. He later served as a Bishop of the Downey First Ward and a counselor in the Stake Presidency of the Downey California Stake. He served a second mission with his wife Lorraine in the Canada Halifax Mission from 2000-2002. Bob enjoyed serving and sharing his testimony of his Savior. He was blessed with many friendships and associations over the years of his activity in the church.
Chucks greatest joy in this life was his family. He loved and admired his younger and only brother, Richard Gary Canning. They shared many memories together over the years. One of his choice moments in this life was meeting and marrying his dear wife, Lorraine Evans. They were married for time and eternity in the Los Angeles LDS Temple, February 6, 1965. The saddest moment was when she passed on September 10, 2013, having spent 48 loving years together. Chuck felt deeply blessed with his family. He is survived by his son, Robert Charles Canning (wife Carolyn and children Pari, Caleb and Aleigha); three daughters, Tamara Haar (husband Jerry and children Carissa, Katelyn, Cameron and Conner), Deborah Petersen (husband Bryan and children Trevor, Holly, Collin and Kira) and Cheryl Mead (husband Randy and children Allison, Avery and Mason); and his brother, Richard Gary Canning. His 14 grandchildren brought so much joy to his life.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 10511 Paramount Blvd., Downey, California. Charles Robert Canning will be laid to rest at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California.
