Catherine Ann Torres

Catherine Ann Torres, age 91, passed away at home surrounded by family on March 16. 2017 in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. She was the fourth of nine children of Anna and John Hertenstein from NY, NY. She was a beloved wife to Anthony Torres, and cherished mother of Fred (Laura) Torres, Laurette (Chris) Stiles, Denise (Greg) Phillips, and Theresa (David) Segal. She is survived by 10 grandchildren.



Catherine lived much of her life in Whittier, CA. She was a former executive secretary for North American Aviation and devoted her life to her family, both immediate and those she 'adopted' throughout the years. Catherine loved to dance and found opportunities to share her sense of humor and happy outlook with everyone around her. She was ahead of her time in many respects: as a working mother who always placed her family first, and as a parent who helped her children always see the best in people. She lived her life courageously, graciously, and on her own terms.



Catherine was a long time member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, and leading the acolytes and the Girls' Friendly Society. Her interests were varied, including travel, sewing, gardening, reading and volunteering. Even at an advanced age, she was learning new technologies and social media trends. Most importantly, she was loved by all who had the opportunity to meet her.



The viewing will be held at White Emerson Mortuary, 13304 Philadelphia Street, Whittier, CA., from 1:30-4:30 pm, Saturday, March 25, 2017.

Funeral services are Sunday, March 26, 2017, 2:00 pm, at St. Matthias Episcopal Church, 7056 Washington Ave., Whittier, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St.Matthias Episcopal Church in Catherine's name.
