Bruce Martin, a beloved member of the community, passed away on July 16, 2023, in Fullerton, California. He was born on September 6, 1935.
Education was an important aspect of Bruce's life. He graduated from Whittier High School and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Whittier College in 1957. His commitment to learning continued throughout his life, shaping him into a well-rounded individual.
Bruce had an illustrious career that spanned several decades. From 1957 to 1971, he was a dedicated employee at Shell Oil where he worked in sales in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Following his time at Shell Oil, Bruce served as the executive director of the Pico Rivera Chamber of Commerce from 1971 to 1979. He then went on to serve as the Executive Director of the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce. During his time at the Whittier Chamber, his proudest accomplishments were the establishment of the Hathaway Golf Tournament, as well as leading one of the only chambers of commerce in Southern California to purchase and own its own building. He made countless other significant contributions to the growth and development of the chamber.
Bruce's proudest accomplishments extended beyond his professional life. In 1976, he served as President of the Southern California Chamber of Commerce Executives – a testament to his leadership skills and dedication to supporting businesses in the region. Additionally, Bruce was a valued Board Member from 1975 to 1978 for the California Chamber of Commerce Executives, where he made lasting contributions to the development of commerce and trade in the state. He also was a faithful member of the Whittier Host Lions Club.
Bruce's warm personality endeared him to all who crossed his path. He would always say, “You have to love them all,” and he fully embodied that sentiment. He was known for his kind and welcoming nature, always ready with a smile. His great sense of humor brought joy and laughter to those around him. Bruce had an innate ability to make everyone feel at ease in his presence.
Outside of work, Bruce enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. He loved spending time outdoors engaging in activities such as golfing, jogging, skiing, and following spectator sports. These pastimes allowed him to unwind and connect with nature.
Family was of utmost importance to Bruce. He is preceded in death by his loving spouse, Sally Martin and his daughter, Patricia “Pepper” Blais. He is survived by his son-in-law, Morgan Blais (Shelli) and his cherished granddaughters, Emma and Lauren. His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he created with his family will be treasured forever.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on August 24, 2023, at the Ruth B. Shannon Center For The Performing Arts in Whittier, California. The service will commence at 11:00 AM and conclude at 12:00 PM. It will serve as an opportunity for friends, family, and community members to come together and honor Bruce's life.
Bruce Martin will always be remembered for his compassionate nature, jovial spirit, and unwavering dedication to his community. His legacy lives on through his accomplishments and the lives he touched. May he rest in peace knowing that he has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
