Bill R. Sponsler

July 19, 1933 — January 19, 2015

Bill was born to Gerald and Marie Sponsler on a farm near the small town of Humeston, Iowa on July 19, 1933. He was the youngest of 4 very active boys. His early school days were spent at Happy Hollow Country School and helping his family on the farm. During his eighth grade year he began attending LeRoy High School where he met and dated his future wife, Donna Binford. While in high school Bill participated in basketball and baseball. In 1951 Bill graduated with his 9 classmates. Soon after high school he began working at a meat packing plant in Des Moines. At 19 he enlisted in the Marine Corps with his brother, Jay. After basic training, Bill came home and he and Donna were married at the Justice of the Peace.

He was immediately deployed to Korea, but on the way (by ship) there was a cease fire. He then spent a year in Japan. When he came back from Japan he spent the rest of his service at Camp Pendleton where his first daughter, Vicki was born in 1955. Once out of the service they moved to Whittier and they welcomed their second daughter Kathy, in 1956. They moved to their current home in Whittier in 1957. The twins, Mike and Mark were born in 1960. Bill worked for the Collier Carbon & Chemical plant in Brea, CA til he was 58. The plant closed and early retirement meant more time for travelling and being with family.

They took many family vacations to Iowa seeing relatives, riding horses, boating, skiing, riding mini bikes and motorcycles. Bill was very active as a little league coach for Mike and Mark. They also camped and rode dirt bikes. If the kids were having fun, he was having fun. He loved golf and played on a Softball team. When the grandkids came along, Bill would go to great lengths to attend as many of their sports events as possible.

After retirement, Bill helped at the Church building shelves and was on the Building and Grounds committee. He was willing to do whatever was needed.

Bill is preceded in death by his son Mark, his mother and father and 3 brothers, Ernie, Harley, & Jay. He is survived by his wife, Donna, children Vicki, Kathy & Mike and grandchildren Kelli, Calvin, Lisa, Kyle, Mark, Jenna, & Leah and great grandchildren, Hailey, Nicholas, Mia, Aaron, & Kate.
