Benjamin Bernal, Jr. was born on December 18, 1929 in Bell, California to Benjamin Sr. and Adele (Andrade) Bernal. He passed away April 30, 2012 at his home in Lynwood, California.Benjamin grew up and attended school in Los Angeles County, graduating from Fremont High School. He went on to serve his country honorably in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1960, Benjamin married Valentina Watkins. They have enjoyed over 50 years together and raised 6 children: Elsa, Julia, Daniel, David, Paul, and Frank. Benjamin worked as an assembler for Chrysler. A proud member of the United Auto Workers Union (Local 230), Benjamin put in over 33 years.Next to his family, music was Benjamin's biggest love. He loved it all--rock-n-roll oldies, blues, big band and more! Another favorite pasttime was fixing up old bicycles. A man with a big heart, he typically gave them away or sold them very cheap to those who were less fortunate. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather who always had a nickname for everyone. Those who knew him will remember him for his goodness towards them.Viewing will take place on from 6-8pm, with open sharing starting at 7pm, on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at White Emerson Mortuary, 13304 E. Philadelphia St., Whittier, CA 90601. Mass will be celebrated the following morning, Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 9:30AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Whittier, California. Interment will follow at 2pm on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.Benjamin is survived by his wife, Valentina; daughters, Elsa Gutierrez and Julia (Tom) Serrato; sons, Daniel (Lisa), David, Paul and Frank Bernal; brothers, Jess and David Bernal; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Rey Cruz Lucero.
