Barbara Ann Carrillo was born April 28, 1952, in Whittier, California, to Robert and Lupe (Trejo) Bedoya. She passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2018, in Whittier, California, at the age of 66.
Barbara grew up in Whittier and attended Longfellow Elementary School, Granada Middle School, and Monte Vista High School.
On July 22, 1972, Barbara married the love of her life, Arnold Carrillo, at St. Gregory the Great Church in Whittier, California. They made their home in Whittier, California, where they raised their two sons, Daniel and Gabriel. Barbara was a stay-at-home mom while her sons were young, and she was very active in their activities. She was very involved in the PTA at La Colima School in Whittier and became the PTA President. She was also very committed to youth soccer and Whittier Little League.
Always prioritizing her boys, Barbara still made time to take college courses around their schedules. She eventually went to work as the Librarian at La Colima Elementary School, and upon earning her degree in Child Development from Cal State Fullerton, she was offered a position to teach full-time at La Colima. She taught first grade for eighteen years, retiring in 2012. During those years of teaching, Barbara also remained a student. She earned her Masters in Education from Walden University.
A third generation Whittierite, Barbara lived her entire life in Whittier with the exception of two years when she accompanied her husband, Arnold, at various posts during the Vietnam War. During that time they lived in Texas, Thailand, and Okinawa, Japan.
As previously noted, Barbara always put her family first. She loved them very much and enjoyed spending time with them more than anything else. Barbara always considered her greatest accomplishment to be the raising of her children.
Gardening and reading were among Barbaras favorite pastimes. She also developed a love for golf. She gave it a try and became hooked! She was a long-time parishioner at St. Gregory the Great Church, and she volunteered at the Interfaith Food Center in Santa Fe Springs after her retirement.
Family and friends will remember Barbara for her love and her light. Her presence would always brighten any situation.
Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Arnold; sons, Daniel (Trudy) and Gabriel (Megan) Carrillo; sister, Teri Barela; grandsons, Elijah, Sol, and Henry; and granddaughter, Hadley, named after Hadley St. in Whittier where her father, Gabriel, was born.
