Antonia Aguilar Compean was born July 16, 1921, in Mimbres, New Mexico, to Hermenegildo and Juanita (Castillo) Aguilar. She passed away in Whittier, California, on Sunday, July 6, 2014, just 10 days shy of her 93rd birthday.
Toni, as she was affectionately known, grew up and went to school in New Mexico. In 1948, her entire family moved to Los Angeles County, California. Shortly thereafter, Toni met Raul Compean, the love of her life. They were married on August 13, 1949, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Whittier, California. They made their home in Santa Fe Springs, California, where they raised their family, and later moved to Whittier.
Having been raised on a farm, Toni knew the value of hard work and was very driven in all she did. She worked as an electronics assembler for many years and was able to assist in the manufacturing of electrical components used for the Space Shuttle program. While her family always came first, gardening was a real passion for Toni. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting and other crafts.
Toni will be remembered as a loving, kind and gracious woman who always demonstrated a strong character. She was capable of doing anything she set her mind to. Toni was someone her family and friends could always turn to for counsel. When asked for her opinion she would speak straight and give sound advice. Nothing was more important to Toni than family. She was the ultimate caregiver to her parents, siblings, husband and children. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her three children, Edward (Savannah), Belia, and Efren (Tamara) Compean; and two sisters, Mercedes and Cruz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raul Compean, in 1992.
Viewing will take place from 6-7pm on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at White Emerson Mortuary, 13304 E. Philadelphia St., Whittier, California. A vigil will immediately follow at 7pm.
